By admin, on February 1st, 2012 There is a transportation bill currently on the floor of the US House of Representatives which will eliminate any sort of federal funding for biking or walking programs. This includes the Safe Routes to School program.
Below is more information and a link to send a letter or email to your Representative.

Consider Biking Action Alert!!!

Today, Consider Biking is joining in with our national partners to send a national alert asking you to call, e-mail or fax your U.S. House Representative and ask them to protect funding for critical and popular bicycling and walking programs – please take a moment to do this if you haven’t already.
When you click through to the LAB advocacy system…there’s a sample draft letter, and it’ll push the letters to the right place. Its super easy, and takes about 1-2 minutes.
House leadership has been pressing to eliminate bicycling and walking in the Transportation bill for the past year. The attacks have been relentless. The Committee has finally released its draft of the new bill…and although we knew the bill would be bad news for biking and walking…we didn’t think it would go so far as to completely cut every reference to bicycling and walking out of federal transportation policy.

A study, albeit a very small one, of 19 schoolchildren in Missouri found a 26.5-percent increase in reading comprehension among those who walked to school compared with those who got rides.
That statistic was offered up at last week’s Clintonville Safe Routes to School community meeting by Julie Walcoff of the Ohio Department of Transportation. The study only involved a classroom of 19 students, but the dramatic results have caused in a larger study to be undertaken, the Ohio Safe Routes to School program manager said.
Her comments about not merely the physical but also the mental benefit of walking were echoed by Jamie Turner of Columbus Public Health, another of the guest speakers at the meeting, which . . . → Read More: Attendees hear benefits of physical activity for children

The road toward getting more Clintonville students to walk or bike to school became a little clearer last week, though many additional obstacles must be maneuvered before the effort can secure federal funds through the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Safe Routes to School leaders hosted a communitywide meeting last Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Columbus Mennonite Church, 35 Oakland Park Ave. More than 50 people attended, including representatives from most of Clintonville’s schools serving grades K through eighth.
Guest speakers who addressed the meeting, and answered questions, were Julie Walcoff, SRTS program manager at ODOT; Jamie Turner, SRTS coordinator for Columbus Public Health; and Terry Stewart from the Columbus Public Service Department.
